Raising Wise Men

Raising sons to be wise men is a challenging task, but one that we embraced through biblical principles. With the wealth of wisdom and guidance from the Bible for raising children, learning the nuances of this guidance in order to raise our sons to be wise men was indeed a learning process.

The Bible teaches that wisdom begins with fearing the Lord (Proverbs 1:7) and that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom (Psalm 111:10). This meant to us that teaching our sons to respect and honor God should be a top priority. We prayed by instilling in them a deep reverence for God, we can help them to develop a strong moral compass that will guide them throughout their lives.

While the challenges of 'today' are prevalent, our heart in raising our sons to be wise men is teaching them to be responsible and accountable for their actions. As we read in scripture, we will all be held accountable for our actions (Ecclesiastes 12:14) and that we will be judged according to our deeds (Revelation 20:12). It is important to teach our sons to take responsibility for their actions and to understand that their choices have consequences. By instilling a sense of personal responsibility, we hope they have foundational truths to help them to make wise decisions throughout their lives.

Alongside these, how do you teach a son to be humble? Proverbs 22:4 states "the reward for humility and fear of the Lord is riches, honor, and life." Teaching humility and that they are not above any other person is important in developing a wise mind, and this only comes through transparency of your own journey with Christ. We are not supposed to have it all together, we simply display the times we are clinging to the savior as we ourselves journey through life. I have often said, if the parents can get it right the kids have a chance.

With that, we hoped to model wisdom and humility transparently through our own behavior for our sons. We learn through scripture that parents are to set an example for their children (Ephesians 6:4) and that children should obey their parents (Ephesians 6:1) "God grant us the strength to set a good example for our sons by living a wise and responsible life ourselves."

Raising sons to be wise men is a challenging task, and yet one that can be guided by biblical principles. By instilling a strong moral foundation, teaching responsibility and accountability, and modeling wise behavior, we pray the evidence of Christ will develop the wisdom and understanding our sons need to lead fulfilling and meaningful lives.
